NTSE 2009 Theory Exam

Hey all,

Well.. I was pretty busy with my internship while I realized that EasyNTSE (www.easyntse.co.cc) website received 101 page visits in a single day on 11th May, i.e. yesterday. It was quite a surprize for me to see actually so many people visting the website so early despite interviews being in July. Then followed the mails from plenty of you requesting projected cut-offs and overall feedback on the NTSE Level II Theory Exam that took place on 10th May, i.e. last sunday.

Well.. again.. the website was made to help you prepare specifically for the interviews; but since having received requests from so many of you, let EasyNTSE extend the domain a bit through this blog. It's to reduce your own anxiety about exam results, so make a right use of it.

As far the pattern goes it was a straight forward pattern of 100 questions for MAT and SAT to be solved in 1.5 Hrs each. Also heard from some of you that last 10 questions in SAT paper were mixed from all the subjects. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Now, regarding the thing you people are interested in knowing, that is projected cut-offs. Well.. since original NTSE Question papers are not available, it's very difficult to make even an calculated guess. We can still figure them out if we have sufficient feedbacks from you people. So, this is the thread, please reply back as a comment to this post your theory exam experience, how difficult the paper was, how much could you attempt and how many marks do you expect in paper I and paper II. This will be a nice platform to share your exam experiences and performances. In case you don't want to disclose it publically, you can mail it to nonedonesawant@gmail.com with the subject EasyNTSE. We assure you to put up projected cut-offs and other similar details based on statistical analysis as soon as we have sufficient replies.

To end with, even while getting into all this scores, cut-offs, selection business, let me say, enjoy your vacations, you have already spent half of them preparing for Level II.

Also, EasyNTSE website (www.easyntse.co.cc) is under updation for this year's NTSE interviews, lot many interview experiences from last year are being added. Updated EasyNTSE website will be back with a bang very very soon. Let's hope that it'll help for your interviews this year. Let me not forget to add the website has already received over 21000 cumulative page hits since its launch on 2nd July last year.

Keep Visiting. Keep writing to us. It's your feedbacks which keep the site alive. :)

Best of Luck!

I, Aditya Yadav of class VIII gave my NTSE Level II exam on may 10 2009. I expect around 50-55 in MAT and 55-60 in SAT.Further I would add that this time the paper had 100 questions in both MAT and SAT unlike previous year pattern which had 90 questions. The extra ten questions were a mix from all subjects and had no options.

Hi! I am Dhruv Gupta and I just love your site, i am sure it will be helpful for the interview.
I gave my NTSE stage 2 exam on 10th May. Total questions - 200. MAT was very easy, expecting in 90s. in SAT, Science was completely from 8th class book, maths was tough, and SSt was just out of the syllabus. I am expecting in 60s in SAT. Total - around 150s. Will I be able to reach the interview?

I, Deep of Class 8th(Today in class 9th) gave my NTSE Exam on 10th May, 2009.

I would LIKE to share my EXPERIENCES at the time of exam. This time there were hundred questions for both MAT and SAT, which we have to do in 90-90 minutes. This proved to be a harder task. The MAT section was very tough and interesting. One needs a very clever mind and Series of practices for MAT to gain 90 marks in MAT (as Dhruv Gupta said). I wonder how he had prepared. The time was very precious at that moment. In SAT we were expecting that IT will give us a lot of time but I wonder the questions they asked were TIME TAKING. In most of the questions 4 or 5 statements were given and it was asked that which statements are correct, so one has to read all the statements that took the time. The MATHS section was very difficult and I didn't expected that much difficulty. It was just shocking! I guess that I would gain about 70-75 in Both sections. No need to worry about the last ten questions as some students get scared that they have to learn the SPELLINGS in SAT because the options were provided and one has to just write the number of the option in the space provided.

Dhruv Gupta said...

Hello asha, just liked to inform you...I didn't study ANYTHING from the MAT section...whatever I knew was because of a little bit of practice for the 1st stage. I feel that you don't need to study much for MAT. It is to be attempted from the common sense trapped in your grey matter. And trust me, MAT was very simple(though tougher than the first stage). I agree that in SAT, time was very less and maths was very tough. I found the 10subjective questions of SAT the easiest(they were actually objective only as you just had to write the number).

@ Nandan Sir, eagerly waiting for your analysis on this and the projected cut-offs.

I, pronnoy gave my NTSE exam held on May 10, 2009. I found the MAT paper bit lengthy as I could complete only 85 odd quetions. Hope to secure 80 marks in MAT. The Maths paper of SAT was found very tough, but Science & Social Studies could be done reasonably well. I expect around 70 marks. The last 10 questions of both MAT & SAT were quite easy. Could you please tell about the possible cut offs.?

SAT was a bit easy for me and I expect about 80-90 marks in it too. Total 160-175 marks. Will I be able to appear in the interview? Please tell me the expected cut off also.

Hi Nandan bhaiya, this is Spandan from Kolkata. I appeared for the NTSE 2009 2nd level. I found out your website at googlepages. Thanks for all those detailed informations.

As for the questions of 2nd level, they were tougher than the questions of our state level, however, those of Science and SS, were easier because they were understanding based rather than strict knowledge based. The Math portion was really tougher than expected. None of the students I met were able to solve them properly, and claimed that they were of much higher standard than 8th. There were, indeed, some algebras which were tough, and the time alloted in this level was short for all the questions to be attempted properly.

And in MAT, questions were tougher too. The time was really VERY limited unlike our state level. Whatever, I found an unpredicted question pattern, that involved a diagram of a maze with different people like A, B, X ,etc. on different parts of it, followed by questions like 'How many turns does A need to come out of the maze' and so on.

I would like to make a request: Please reply me mentioning what the typical (usual) marks for moving to level 3 is. Do all people scoring 40% above (32% for SC/ST) get to 3rd level?

Chaitanya Kumar said...

Hello !
Your site http://easyntse.googlepages.com is very helpful and congrats for that. Anyways, I have been selected for Junior Science Talent Search (JSTS), so it would be very kind of you if you could tell me something about the same, whether it is same as NTSE or a bit low or high, what should I prepare for that and other stuff related to JSTS.
Thanks

Hi Harshit and Mr.Anonymous.I gave the first round of NTSE from UP and found the MAT section extremely easy.I had expected a 92+ in MAT in the first round.I had also successfuly completed the MAT exam in 1 hr only.the same was wid all my friends. The Problem however was that with the SAT section. As far as i remember most of the questions were from the MUghal period of History. From Physics i remember that many questions were from the lessons Magnetism and Electric circuits. In maths we were also asked a few questions from Trignometry and Logarithms but they were easy.Thats all i remeber from the First Stage Exam.

@ Everyone

First let me clarify about the rules which few people are talking about. E.g. Cut-Offs being 40% for general category and 32% for reserved category. Let me clarify that this is the bare minimum requirement they look for.
This only means that if they have to select say 1500 students and they find only 1000 students above 40%, they will select only 1000. But if they find 2500 students above 40%, they will be selecting the pre-decided number only, which is in this case we assumed 1500.

Secondly, some anonymous giving last 2 year's cut-offs. I am not sure about authenticity of this information. If there is any valid source, please post so.

Now, looking at the replies I have got so far and taking into consideration the facts like few people underestimate or overestimate the performance, I think those who are getting above 140 are surely through. Exact cut-off could be around 130.

But you never know, this is based on the feedback given by you people. Don't get disheartened if you are not getting around this total, you might have as well underestimated your performance. Those who think they are through, wait for the results, you might have ended up making silly mistakes. So Everyone, Wait for the results.

Results will be out in about 15-20 more days maximum. Wish you all the best for the results.

I do not have any idea about JSTS, since it didnt exist in my high-school days. If anyone has any idea will post it here and help you out.

@Rishi/Everyone

Good that you asked about olympiads.
Science Olympiad Foundation conducts private olympiads namely NSO(National Science Olympiad), NCO(National Cyber Olympiad), IMO(Maths Olympiad).
Unified Council conducts another private exam NSTSE (National Science Talent Search Exam).
Note that all the above are private olympiads, meant for experience of competitive exams and Lots of lots prizes. :P
These exams do not lead you to international olympiads to represent India.

Official olympiads include Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Astronomy, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Earth Science Olympiad. Here, you can officially represent India in International Olympiads.

Physics and chemistry would be overboard for students in 9th standard. Generally people appear for these 2 in 11th and 12th standard.

Astronomy, Astronomy & Astrophysics,Maths and Earth Science is what you should target from now on.

Level I of Maths Olympiad is called RMO (Regional Maths Olympiad). Many books and coaching centres are available. Start preparing from now on, if you aim to be part of international team. Syllabus is not a barrier. Even 9th standard students have been part of international teams.

Astronomy and A&A(Astronomy and physics), these 2 olympiads have a seperate "Junior" section even in International Versions for 9th and 10th standard students. Screening procedure involves exam called NSEA (National Standard Exam in Astronomy). Again, 9th/10th standard students are always part of International Astro Olympiads.
I do not have much info about Earth Science though.

For more info visit about Olympiads,
http://olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in/

for few more useful links visit,

these links are actually unsorted ones, I had made this page for one of the motivational lectures.

Nandanji these are very very authentic information on cut off obtained from NCERT in writing using RTI...

Thanks lock blaster for all the info...

Can we pool some questions from memory...it will be gr8 collection and will help future NTSE aspirants...pl. Come out and put up all you remember of the questions...particularly in science and SST

Nandan Sawant said...

I guess.. enough of discussion over cut-off business. What was going to happen has already happened and there is nothing in your hand now.

Concentrate on the upcoming exams. Dig info about Olympiads from the links I gave, find out local resources available as I do not know all of them. There are plenty of new private exams that have come up, you can give them as an experience. There is Homi Bhabha Young Scientist Exam for those who are in and around Mumbai. There is Maharashtra Talent Search Exam for those in Maharashtra.
This is the time when few people start preparing from IIT-JEE correspondance, infact it helps not for JEE but for exams like NTSE and others. Basically, you learn to use your brain in right direction with requisite amount of basic knowledge. It's always advantageous to stay ahead of the regular curricula, It helps a lot in competitive exam. I will post about any other competitive exams/ resources I find.

Dhruv Gupta said...

@ Harshit
You know I was just in the same position as you while preparing for 1st stage. I suggest Saraswati's guide to NTSE, was quite useful for me. For SST, study from past year books of 6th-8th. In my case, the first level paper was tougher that that of 2nd level. MAT was easy in both...some of the questions in these guides are very tough...dont get demoralized by them....and you need something more than just the 8th class books. Another thing you can do is get a correspondance course of some coaching institute like Resonance. They provide you a lot of confidence.
Best of Luck! :)

thanks dhruv bhaiya. somebody suggested TMH giude. I got that but many of the questions are way above 8th Level. Now i'll try sarswati, too.

My opinion on this would be there is nothing like a best guide or a unique guide. Ultimately, it boils down to how much practice you do and how it ends up sharpening your brain. That is what comes handy in the exam.

Dhruv Gupta said...

Well...in my opninon, TMH was pretty useless, though its mat part was good. As far as I remember, nothing was asked from world history in both the levels. They ask a lot of questions from medieval india like delhi sultanate and mughal period.
And yes, the ncert books should be on your fingertips.

Another thing, the Saraswati guide may not be available in many places, I myself got it just a week before the exam....was quite useful though.

i heard that NTSE results of second round are out...and a guy from an orphanage in delhi..

IS it true??

Spandan said...

I think TMH was really cool, especially the MAT part. And some SAT questions were really above general 8th standard, but I think they helped a lot for general knowledge as well as for NTSE.

And for 1st level, I'd suggest that some regional books of the respective governments (like for WB, WBBSE books) and also some regional (not national) publishers' NTSE books are enough. This is because the national level questions were way too much vivid than 1st level, while 1st level questions were concerned merely with regional syllabus. So books for preparation of national level and state level were different, at least for my state.

Hello guys,

This is Kartik Sawhney of Delhi. I took the NTS level II examination on May10 this year. I found the MAT paper quite nice. I expect above 90 in the MAT paper. The SAT paper was alright for me. The Maths section was a bit too tough. I hope to secure 75 in SAT, thereby marks totalling to 165. Further, some of you wanted info on the various olympiads. Apart from the olympiads discussed herein, there are many more. You can visit my blog bonetickling.blogspot.com for an olympiad calendar for the year 2009.
@Rohan, the IO and the ENO/INO olympiads you have been talking about, these are the abreviated terms for Indian Olympiad and Equivalent National Olympiad. A student gets to participate in these examination, only if he/she qualifies the first stage, i.e. the National Standard Examinations organised by IAPT.

Junior Science Talent Search Examination is organised by Directorate of Education, Govt. of NCT of Delhi for Delhi students only. For the selection year 2010, the exam will be conducted on January31, 2010, and only students of class IX (2009-2010) securing over 65% in class VIII are eligible. The exam consists of general knowledge, mathematics and Science subject. There are two papers. paper I largely consists of GK, but may also contain reasoning and MAT question. Paper II consists of questions on Physics, Chemistry, Biology (50 questions per subject) and Mathematics (25). Questions in paper I can be MCQs, one word answer and other types of objective questions. Question in paper II are also MCQs. Students can apply for this exam individually or through their schools. Forms are released by the directorate usually in July/August. You may visit www.edudel.nic.in for more details.

MAT : tough. He could complete only 82 questions in 100. The teacher gave the paper 5 minutes late in their class. A few parents complained, but no use.
SAT: Science and maths was easy. But Sst was mostly about Maharashtra, and it was tough. I suggest students in future should read up on facts about Maharashtra, like which animal has a sanctuary in Maharashtra.
I went through this website and could not get any answer for when the first level results will be announced. Any idea? thanks and all the best to everyone..keep trying hard.

I also joined VISTAAR-NTSE of RESONANCE last year.I qualified the 1st level and the 2nd level xam too went awesome.I was sure of my selection in the 1st round. But now the competition gets more tougher at the national level.
I would like you to study from RESONANCE books as well as ur course books .NOTE:The RESONANCE's MAT and Social Science books are a must to read. You should read these books wholeheartedly as well as the maths book. You should also read other books but as for me the questions in 1st level of SST.MATHS and MAT were quite similar to the RESO's questions.
IF you qualify the 1st level(i think u will) then.............
For any querie let me know at aman_dhoni7@rediffmail.com
U r from which state, school and board and what was ur last year's percentage.Did u sat for any other competitive xam?REPLY FAST PLEASE!
